Environmentally Conscious Design - Partners in a Sustainable World

Because buildings are built to last for generations, JRMA is committed to sustainable design, enhancing the experiences of those who interact with the facility while conserving valuable resources and protecting the environment.

Our architects and engineers plan and design buildings with careful consideration of the environmental context - the natural world as well as the urban community. Our designs typically incorporate products with high-recycle material content and structural systems that optimize the efficient use of materials with the overall goal of a low carbon footprint project. We also incorporate strategies that promote water and energy conservation, with an emphasis on renewable energy, working with every aspect of the project to control waste throughout the construction process.

The LEED Green Building Rating System is the standard for measuring building sustainability. Over 75 percent of our current projects involve our LEED-accredited professionals. JRMA has successfully delivered a LEED Platinum Certified airport hangar – the first of its kind in the world – at Hangar 25 in Burbank, California, as well as numerous LEED Gold Certified solid waste facilities, a LEED Certified vehicle emission testing and lab facility and LEED gold manufacturing facilities. JRMA is also at the forefront of integrating CALGreen with the design of the first compliant hangar in the state to meet strict sustainable design requirements. In addition to LEED, JRMA also implements Envision, the Living Building Challenge, and other sustainable design programs and metrics as required for our projects.

JRMA is proud of its role in designing many state-of-the-art facilities that process recyclables, and green and non-organic waste, thereby decreasing the demand on landfills, providing material for reuse, and producing energy. Many of these facilities include education centers that offer teaching experiences for schoolchildren about the impact trash has on the environment.

Our own offices reflect our commitment to environmental stewardship. Our Orange County office integrates design elements such as daylighting, automatic lighting, high-SRI roof, drought-resistant native landscaping, and low-flow fixtures. The building itself is a repurposed warehouse, having previously housed an industrial metal fabrication business. The JRMA Portland office is a sustainable adaptive re-use of the historic Spalding Building in downtown Portland, built in 1911 and renovated in 2016. The renovation of the JRMA suite includes an open-office design to maximize daylighting, energy efficient lighting, use of the original finish materials for the exterior walls and an optimized HVAC system. The Houston office is a new energy-efficient, multi-story office building with numerous sustainable design features including daylighting, recycled content building materials and high efficiency HVAC systems.
