Designed to meet high community standards for aesthetics and sustainability, the Shoreway Environmental Center will further solidify San Carlos’s reputation as a truly “green” community. The existing transfer station building will be expanded 14,780 s.f. to house unloading space for public customers and allow for a 30,000 ton per year increase in organics. The new 70,200 s.f. Material Recovery Facility will handle an increase of over 20,000 tons per year in recyclables from residential and commercial customers and will feature state of the art processing equipment to handle single stream recyclables. This new infrastructure will support an annual increase in recycling of over 50,000 tons, which will yield major reductions in local greenhouse gas emissions.
Among the project’s many sustainable features is an improved traffic flow plan, which will eliminate traffic overflow onto surrounding streets and cut vehicle emissions by reducing idle times.
The facility will also house the Environmental Education Program, a community resource for local students, teachers and other visitors who seek to learn more about recycling and sustainability. Visitors will have access to viewing galleries, where they can see the recycling process in action.
Other sustainable features include:
-
Photovoltaic panels and/or wind turbines to generate power for the facility
-
Pervious pavement
-
Water efficient irrigation & plantings
-
Recycled content building materials
-
Reuse of materials
-
Rain water harvest and use
